Bye-Bye

It’s a small word. A word accompanied by a flick of the wrist, a waving hand. A word I hear each morning as he says it to his dad and then his sister and then to me. Bye-Bye. In a sing-song voice. A toddler voice. A voice starting to manipulate language for a purpose. Bye-Bye. [...]

Copycat

He’s the little brother. So he copies. We tell her that imitation is the highest form of flattery. And she mostly agrees. She learns to do a bridge on the gym floor below. And he wants to do one too. Only he has it all wrong. She’s a dancer, the big sister. He’s figured that [...]

Our Brand Of Crazy

One of my earliest memories of Ken as a father is standing in line at the grocery store, Nora in her carrier perched precariously in the cart, a mom and her son in front of us in line. The little boy was wearing super-hero pajamas with a cape velcroed on the back. It was the [...]

Is There A Ghost?

Ken fell to the stomach bug today. Nora is still a bit cranky from it. Miles, he’s not fussy. He’s hilarious. I like to ease into summer, to feel my way into a new routine, to give myself time to adjust to spending days at home (in a house under construction, no less). And just [...]

Grooming

I’m going to label this week as the week wherein I resign myself to having a toddler only to realize I’m pretty ok with that.  The messy parts of toddlerhood have been second fiddle this week to the isn’t-he-just-too-cute parts. And I guess these parts (or the isn’t-she-just-too-cute-parts) were the motivating factor to this here [...]

What Is It About Sleeping Babies?

Am I the only one who loves to watch my children sleep? Who loves to soak in the peace and calm and the warmth of soft skin and the rhythm of breathing?  What is it about sleeping babies? Should I feel guilty that instead of feeling saddened or worried by Miles’ mild fever on Sunday, [...]

Functional Legs

These baby chub ankles will be gone soon, now that his legs function for walking. There’s nothing like an ankle that puffs out and up and over shoes. An ankle that doesn’t really exist yet. An ankle that is hiding somewhere in there, waiting to make its appearance. I’ll miss these cankles when they’re gone.

Cousins

There have been three small people in the house all weekend. Nora and Miles, of course, and their new cousin, Lucas, who’s four months old. This is the first time we’ve all met Lucas, Ken’s sister’s new baby, who smiles and happy-screeches and loves to watch ceiling fans. We’ve known Lucas from facetime conversations on [...]

Happy Easter

Aside from the inevitable I-only-ate-candy-for-breakfast meltodown and the I’m-getting-my-molars fussiness, we had a great day. It was filled with family and extended family and new cousins (more on that later) and Easter egg hunts. See below for picture overload…

Obligatory

Somehow Nora survived four years in Texas without her mom throwing her into a field of bluebonnets to snap her photo. Miles will not be able to boast of the same feat, or the same neglect, depending on the view you take. This is the obligatory activity of this time of year here in Central [...]
